About Allison Ober

I specialize in working with adolescents, women, and families, with a particular focus on eating disorder treatment. I'm passionate about working with teens and value building genuine, trusting connections that help them feel understood and supported.

I often work with high-achieving teens who feel overwhelmed by the pressure to excel academically, participate in extracurricular activities, and remain competitive in the college admissions process. Beneath the surface of their achievements, many are struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, isolation, or depression. For some, these pressures also contribute to difficulties with food, body image, and their relationship with themselves.

I provide a compassionate, supportive space where individuals can work through these challenges and where families can find guidance as they navigate the complexities of eating disorder recovery. My goal is to help clients move beyond the pressures and struggles that are holding them back and build a life with greater balance, connection, and freedom.

Expertise and experience

Professional Qualifications

Education

I hold a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from George Mason University, with a focus on clinical counseling and therapeutic interventions. I also have a Master's degree in Special Education from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Training

As a licensed professional counselor, I have specialized training in eating disorders, including Family-Based Treatment (FBT), which allows families to play an active role in helping their children heal from eating disorders. I am committed to staying up to date on current treatment modalities to best serve my clients and families.

Experience

With over 25 years of experience in schools and private practice, I have worked with diverse populations facing a range of mental health challenges. My background in special education has deeply informed my work with neurodivergent clients, and I am an LGBTQ+ Ally and advocate. I understand the school system and enjoy collaborating with teachers and school counselors to help my clients get the support and accommodations they need for healing while they are in school.

Specializations

My areas of expertise include eating disorders, perfectionism, anxiety disorders, trauma recovery, and relationship issues. I have worked extensively with clients struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and ARFID. I also work with women balancing parenting, work, relationships, and the invisible mental labor that can feel impossibly heavy.

Values and Approach

I utilize a client-centered approach to tailor therapy to each client's unique needs and goals. I offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation to see whether my approach is the right fit for you or your child. I bring warmth, humor, and collaboration into my work as we define goals and create a clear path toward healing.
